Thousands of trees planted on Ricoh’s Big Green Day Out
May 1, 2012
Ricoh New Zealand’s 'Big Green Day Out' at Motuihe Island in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour yesterday saw over 2,500 trees planted, adding to the more than 14,500 trees the company has planted since 2004.
Ricoh New Zealand managing director Mike Pollok says the ninth 'Big Green Day Out' on 29 April saw more than 120 staff and customers spend the day planting on the island, and was a highlight for the company’s Auckland staff, customers and their families.
"We are very proud to be contributing to the Motuihe Island Restoration Project, and it was great to see the growth in the trees we had planted in previous years," he said.
The Ricoh contingent planted 2,510 trees in the Nga Taikorapa Valley, nicknamed 'Ricoh Valley', an area they have been planting in since 2006. Mike Pollok said this year they planted a mix of colonising trees such as cabbage and manuka, and are now starting to plant canopy trees such as pohutukawa, puriri and karamu.
"The volunteering day is in line with Ricoh’s commitment to the environment and the community", said Mr Pollok.
"It was great to see the kids having a great day too – I’m sure the lolly scramble helped!"
'Ricoh Valley' vegetation now includes plants which would naturally feature in a coastal forest: flax, taupata, karamu, akeake, karo, ngaio, karaka, puriri, haupara, manuka, tawapou, and mahoe.
